Rocky Mountain Elk are part of the deer family. The Shawnee called elk "wapiti", which translates to "white rump." An average bull can weight around 700lbs and stand 5ft tall. Colorado has the largest elk population in North America. An interesting fact about the elk is that female elk find a camouflaged area in thick brush or tall grass to hide their babies. Their calves remain motionless until they are around 16 days old.
